Find Relief from TMD in Winnipeg

Do you suffer from jaw pain, headaches, facial discomfort, and teeth grinding? These can all be signs of a temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD). The temporomandibular joints (TMJs) connect your jaw to your skull and play an essential role in speaking, eating, and everyday jaw movement. When these joints or the surrounding muscles become strained or misaligned, they can lead to a range of uncomfortable symptoms. At Grant Dental Centre, we offer comprehensive assessment and treatment options designed to reduce discomfort and improve your quality of life. Book an appointment today and start on the road to relief.

What Is TMJ/TMD?

The temporomandibular joints are located on either side of the jaw. They act as sliding hinges that allow the mouth to open and close. Temporomandibular disorders, commonly referred to as TMD, affect these joints, the surrounding muscles, or both. Common symptoms of TMD may include:

  • jaw pain or tenderness

  • clicking, popping, or grinding sounds when opening the mouth

  • difficulty chewing or discomfort while eating

  • frequent headaches or facial pain

  • neck and shoulder tension

  • teeth grinding or clenching (bruxism)

  • limited jaw movement or jaw locking

Because symptoms can vary from person to person, a professional evaluation is important for determining the underlying cause and the most appropriate treatment.

How We Assess TMJ Disorders

The first step toward effective treatment is a thorough diagnosis. By understanding the source of your discomfort, we can create a treatment plan tailored to your needs.

During your examination, our team will review your symptoms, jaw function, and oral health. We may recommend a Panorex radiograph, which provides a detailed view of the jaw, teeth, and surrounding structures, which helps us assess the condition of the jaw joints and identify factors that may be contributing to your symptoms.

Treatment Options for TMJ/TMD

Custom Nightguards

Many people unknowingly clench or grind their teeth while sleeping. A custom-made nightguard acts as a protective barrier between the upper and lower teeth, helping to reduce pressure on the teeth, jaw joints, and surrounding muscles.

Benefits of nightguards include:

  • reduced jaw tension and discomfort

  • protection against tooth wear and damage

  • relief from symptoms related to clenching and grinding

  • improved comfort while sleeping

Botox for Muscle Tension and Clenching

For some patients, Botox can be an effective option for treating muscle pain and tension associated with TMD. By relaxing overactive jaw muscles, Botox may help reduce clenching, alleviate discomfort, and improve overall jaw function.

Treatment is minimally invasive and can be used alongside other therapies as part of a comprehensive approach to managing TMJ symptoms.

Sleep Appliances

Sleep-related breathing issues and chronic clenching can also sometimes contribute to jaw discomfort. Custom sleep appliances are designed to help maintain an open airway during sleep, which may reduce snoring and assist patients with certain forms of sleep apnea.

In addition to supporting healthier sleep, these appliances can help decrease strain on the jaw for some individuals.

What to Expect During Treatment

Every patient's experience with TMJ/TMD is unique. Following your assessment, we will discuss your symptoms, explain our findings, and recommend the most appropriate treatment options. Our goal is to help you enjoy everyday activities such as eating, speaking, and sleeping with less discomfort and greater confidence.

Many patients experience gradual improvement as muscle tension decreases and pressure on the jaw joints is relieved. Depending on the severity of symptoms, treatment may involve a single solution or a combination of therapies designed to achieve lasting comfort and function.
